Rug care
How to Care for a Handmade Persian Rug
A handmade rug, cared for properly, lasts generations. Keep these simple rules in mind.
Vacuuming
Vacuum gently, keeping the beater bar off the fringes, and always work in the direction of the pile so the fibers aren't stressed.
Rotation
Turn the rug every 6–12 months so wear and light exposure spread evenly across the whole surface.
Sunlight
Avoid constant direct sun. Vegetal dyes age gracefully, but less light means livelier colors for longer.
Spills
Blot any spill immediately with a clean white cloth — never rub. For water-based stains, a little cold water is all you need.
Rug pads
A good rug pad extends the rug's life and stops it slipping on the floor.
Storage
For long-term storage, never fold a rug — roll it around a tube, wrap it in breathable cotton and keep it somewhere dry.
Professional washing
Every few years, have the rug professionally washed. Silk and high-raj pieces should never be washed at home.
Abrash — a mark of authenticity
The gentle shift in tone across a rug (abrash) is natural, a result of hand-dyeing — a mark of authenticity, not a flaw.
